Srila Prabhupada Memories

Our temple in Calcutta is on 3, Albert Road at the Queen Victoria Square. Prabhupada said that when he was a boy, that part of Calcutta was known as the sahib-quarter or the area where the British used to stay. That is where all the Indian gentleman who became English nobles or knights lived. In fact, the owner of that house was a knight. He was knighted by the King of England.
He used to tell us, how he would drive through this quarter on his bicycle and look at the houses, when he was a boy. He said that it was an exclusive area where only the very elite people stayed, and since we had our temple there it was nice. Sometimes he would joke that we were staying in the sahib quarter. English people were called sahibs. Srila Prabhupada also told us that, when he was a boy, he would sometimes come to the Maidan in the centre of Calcutta, a big park under the control of Fort William, the army base. It is a park like Central Park in New York. It is a very beautiful place and must be several miles long, and two or three miles wide. It goes right from the side of the Ganges to Chowringhee Road (now called something else) Srila Prabhupada said that sometimes his father would have him walk along the park to save the tram fare which used to be five paise. Bhavananda Goswami, Achyutananda Swami, Garamuni Swami, and myself were observing the chaturmasya vrata one year, just eating once a day and following the austerities of the chanting sixty four rounds a day. We also let our beards grow. When Prabhupada saw Bhavananda he said, "You look just like King George" When everyone laughted at that, he said , "No. I have seen." He went on to explain that when he was in school, King GeorgeV, came to India by ship. At that time their capital was in Calcutta. So when he arrived they had all the school children line-up, along the road. Prabhupada remembered that he saw King George go by in his open limousine and everyone cheered. He said that he looked just like Bhavananda Maharaja. He said that on that occasion they also gave a box lunch to all the school children ( samosa and some sweet). Everyone got a box to commemorate the arrival of the King GeorgeV to Calcutta. Once when he was giving a class in Calcutta he told the devotees there, "I do not know how you are doing it, how you are able to remain here in Calcutta. This is all Krishna's mercy, because even I find it difficult. Even I have to travel." He made a little joke out of it. Then he said," Because this is my birth city and you are here, you are getting ten thousand times the credit for doing devotional service here than anywhere else, then back in your own country. Actually it was then that he said, "Even I can't remain here but you are taking this austerity." Calcutta is very crowded, it's quite a change for someone from the West. He was very moved and thankful that the devotees were taking that austerity of remaining in Calcutta, Bengal and helping him to revitalise the sankirtana Movement in its original place. Achyutananda Swami was in Calcutta. I started the Toronto centre and then Jagadish das Adhikari came and we eventually decided that he can become the president. Then I wrote to Srila Prabhupada and asked if he had some other service for me. Since I had already started that temple and it was going nicely with a president, I asked whether I could go and open a new temple or stay there. I could do whatever he wanted . He wrote back and said , "I want you to go to India, Calcutta. Please come and see me": Then I flew to Los Angeles, to get instructions from Srila Prabhupada. At that time, Srila Prabhupada called me into his room and read to me some letters from Achyutananda Dasa Brahmachari and he said, "He has a place, so you can go." In the meantime another letter came from Actyutananda Dasa, that he was still staying in the Gaudiya Math, in Satish Mukerjee Avenue in Bhavanipur, the southern part of Calcutta. So Srila Prabhupada said, I don't want you to go until we have our own place." He was very cryptic. He said, "I will explain everything to you, but just before you go." He did not want to explain anything until i was ready to go. I had two or three meetings with Srila Prabhupada in his quarters in Los Angeles. I remember in the second meeting, he read out a letter about something that his Godbrothers had said. At that time his servant was Devananda das or Maharaj (I dont know), who said to Srila Prabhupada, "I think your Godbrothers are envious." It struck me as funny, being very simple. Just having been here in the west, it seemed very unusual to me, how a Godbrother could be envious or something like that. And then sure enough Srila Prabhupada blasted him and said, "They are my Godbrothers you have no right to question them or criticise them. They are my Godbrothers". Then I thought that yes, it was confirmed that he was off by saying that; it sounded unusual to me. Then Srila Prabhupada said, "I will not send you to India until they have their own place." At that time Bhagavan dasa Adhikari was going from Detroit to open a center, in Chicago and Prabhupada said that I could go with him and help him open the center, and that he would call me when it was time to go to India. Then we had that historical ride with Rupanuga prabhu when the car did not stand the road near Alberquerque. Anyway somehow I reached Chicago. then Srila Prabhupada sent me a telegram, "Please call." So I phoned up Srila Prabhupada and i got the message, "Go immediately to India, to Calcutta. They have their own place. You do not have to come back and get any information from Prabhupada. It is alright." Gargamuni gave me that message. So I never got the briefing that Srila Prabhupada said he would give me about what to watch out for. Gargamuni, I guess, did not want to spend money to send me back to Los Angeles, conserving his finances. Anyway Srila Prabhupada had a fund and he had sent me from his own fund. In India I raised alittle more. Finally I got to Calcutta and unfortunately we did not have a separate residence as Srila Prabhupada had wanted. We were still staying in this Gaudiya Math, in the temple of Srila Prabhupada's Godbrother Bhaktidaita Madhava Maharaja. They treated me very nicely. I stayed there for two months. But Srila Prabhupada kept writing us letters, furious, "You have to get another place. Move out of there and get another place immediately .Do Harinama daily and immediately get another place. Move out of there and have a place of your own. As soon as you have your own place, I am coming." Then Srila Prabhupada flew to Japan and kept writing from there. So finally we found a place in Lake View road(something like that)near Rasabihaari Avenue in South Calcutta. It was a very nice house built by a doctor. It was a brand new three or four storey house. The doctor had said that if saintly Krishna conscious devotees stayed in his house it would be blessed so we could stay there free of rent, for six months. Actually for the first year and a half in Calcutta I did not pay any rent. People always gave us houses free, which is probably historic. Neither did we pay for any food, most of it was donated. When we had a new place we telexed to Srila Prabhupada and he said that he would be coming. To prepare for his arrival, Achyutananda Dasa and myself visited all the newspapers. Achyutananda dasa went to all of Srila Prabhupada's Godbrothers, to invite them to come and meet him at the airport. But he told me he could not get anybody. No one would agree to come. That was very unusual. I had also invited one Maharaja on the stairs of one temple and he said, "Yes! I will go and greet my Godbrother, why not? "then some grhasta Godbrother of Srila Prabhupada came up to him and said, "You cannot go. He is your junior sannyasi. He took sannyasa five years after you did. you can't go and greet him!" Since he was intimidated, he said "Alright, Okay." So we could not get any of Srila Prabhupada's godbrothers to go to the airport. It was very unusual for us. I could not understand it. I had always noticed the difference that when Srila Prabhupada spoke, it seemed to be just earth shattering and just immediately penetrated the heart. And when I would hear his Godbrothers speak, it was interesting and i could feel like a little tingle, but it was never the same. It never had the same overwhelming presence of the spiritual world, as with Srila Prabhupada. That was my own subjective experience. But this was completely bewildering to me. We all went to the airport to meet Srila Prabhupada. We had truck loads of harinama kirtana groups. We had newspaper men. The colonel who was in charge of that Fort William was in charge of the reception so he arranged that Srila Prabhupada did not have to go through the immigration or the customs. They picked him up right from the airplane by the car, drove him to the VIP lounge, where he addressed a press conference. he was a returning celebrity, a returning ambassador of Indian Culture. They gave him royal reception. All the big dignitaries came, people greeted him and we did a kirtana. Srila Prabhupada looked around and he saw some of his godbrothers' disciples, but no godbrother was present. One of the Godbrothers had invited saying, "We will give a reception for Srila Prabhupada in our temple and we will have a feast ready. He should drive up to our temple and we will give him a reception here." It sounded like a very nice proposal. But the Godbrothers themselves did not come to the airport to greet Srila Prabhupada: They had sent a disciple. When we said this to Srila Prabhupada, he looked very stern. we had a big American car for him to ride in and behind it we had all these trucks with kirtana devotees, so that we could go in a procession into the town. Srila Prabhupada jumped into this car and Kirtananda Swami waas with him (if i am correct- I think Kirtananada Swami was with him). Somehow Kirtananada Swami took the steering wheel and Srila Prabhupada said, "Go". I was arranging with the press and everything, and the next thing i knew was that Kirtananda Swami was behind the steering ready to take off. So i had to just run and jump and get into the car in the last minute. Then I told about this invitation to Srila Prabhupada. He said, "We will not go there. Take me directly to our house." I couldn't understand the intricacies. Srila Prabhhupada was very silent and very stern. I had never seen him so intense, upto that point. It was a new experience. we drove him straight to the Lake View Road house. He liked the house. It was brand new. We had a room set up for him with an attached bath and everything. Then Srila Prabhupada explained, "They wanted me to go directly to their temple, so then they would take the credit, that they had sent me to preach over the world. If they were sincere, they would have come and met me at the airport, and requested me to visit their temple. But they sat in their temple and did not come to get me: This is very intricate. It would appear that i was going and reporting back to them, and reporting back to them, and then they would publish that they had sent me and that I was going back to them. therefore I will not go there. You go there, accept their prasadam and bring it here and we will take it." So this was my first introduction to the intricacies of Indian sadhu etiquette and different higher levels of spiritual intrigues. I once wrote to Srila Prabhupada, "What should I do when we meet a sannyasi? When I am in India, there will be so many sannyasis, what should i do?" I just wanted to dod the proper thing, the proper etiquette, being very simple. He wrote back, "You should bow down." then I wrote, "Even if he is a Mayavadi?" "Yes, no harm. Just don't listen to them." But this was a very high level intrigue, but Srila Prabhupada guided us through. In India, taking sannyasa and preaching are very prominent but in the west there are other things which are more prominent In India the environment is a good flied for preaching and people are more receptive to the renounced order of life. So Achyutananda Dasa and myself just being two brahmacharis together in India thought that possibly Srila Prabhupada would ask us to take sannyasa. I was wondering whether he would ask us or not because he had told me once when my temple president was Hamsaduta das, that he and his wife Himavati were trying to get all the brahmacaris and even bhaktas married. I was a bhakta at that time, quite determined to be Krishna conscious and I was not one hundred percent sure that being married was actually what I should be doing. I was not closed to the idea, but at the same time, it was being more or less pushed on me. So I was upset and I came in tears to Srila Prabhupada, "What should I do? The president's wife is trying to pressurise me" He said, "No. You say that it is my order that you cannot be married. The system in India is that you wait til you are twenty five and then the Guru decides which direction the brahmachari should go. So you wait til you are twenty five and I will decide. Until then Hands off." So then I was relieved. So we were thinking may be Srila Prabhupada would ask us, because we knew that he had said that if you want to get first and second initiations you have to ask for it, but to get sannyasa, you have to be asked. Once he called Achyutananda das into his quarters when we were all asleep, at 10 o'clock. I was listening, and i heard Srila Prabhupada was shouting at him. First I thought maybe he was calling him in to give him sannyasa, but it did not sound like he was getting sannyasa. It sounded like Srila Prabhupada was very angry, and I did not know what was actually happening. I could hear bits and pieces. Something about a letter, something about some disciple, something about godbrothers. I could not understand it all together at that time. But i knew for one thing that it did not sound like he was getting sannyasa. In the meantime I heard from the other godbrothers there was something happening in New Vrindavan, that some of our sannyasis had gone alittle bit off, being affected by Mayavadi philosophy and so on, and that Srila Prabhupada explained to us that Achyutananda (I do not remember if he was in the room at that time) had picked up some criticism or something and wrote it in a letter to one of the devotees in America, and as a result of that poison they became affected and developed a mayavadi philosophy. Srila Prabhupada was actually testing Achyutananda to see if he was really into it or not Then he said he was innocent, but he was like a carrier, like a person who carries a disease, by inadvertently repeating something which was envious. And through him, this poison had come and affected those four people: Of course, Srila Prabhupada corrected everything. The first two days it was pretty intense, but after that everything was very nice. We had programs in South Calcutta. Prabhupada went and did these programs all over Calcutta. We had a big car, a 1956 Dodge car which was given by a life member for us to drive. I remember Kirtanananda Swami used to drive the Dodge all over Calcutta. There was a very distinguished group who met every two weeks. It was a society just for very high class exclusive citizens of Calcutta, mostly businessmen. The meeting was held near the corner of Esplanade, the central part of Calcutta, up on the second floor. They had a big programme, when Srila Prabhupada spoke . On that occasion he inaugurated life-membership in India. He told the new life members that they could visit all our temples all over the world and stay there. He told them to pay eleven hundred and eleven rupees,111 (Krishna, God is One) towards the membership. everyone liked that and about three or four people became life members on the spot. One thousand one hundred and eleven rupees was a lot of money in those days. I remember that there was a struggle to be the first, because whoever was first, would be the no.1 life member. In fact even to this day, one of the life members who is no.2 tried to get it changed so that he can be no.1d, but when no.1 heard about it he became very upset . Srila Prabhupada was very happy to accept donations and he issued the first certificates of life membership. Then there was a big feast. Normally we ate only temple prasadam, but this time he said "No. because they have become life members, for preaching we can eat." Of course it was all vegetarian. I remember that Srila Prabhupada was sitting at the head with the devotees on one side and the new life members and dignitaries on the other, It was a very wonderful gathering. That was basically the highlights I remember of how the Calcutta preaching started.

I remember how Prabhupada was in the world fair in Montreal in 1968. It was called "Man and his World." A tour guide was taking Srila Prabhupada around and she was a bit nervous, she did not know what to say to a swami from India. She was all dressed up. She had her hair done up and she was going to take Srila Prabhupada around with a group of devotees and explain the different aspects of the festival. She was sitting there while we were moving in some kind of a train that took you from one pavilion to the next. She did not know what to say and all of a sudden Srila Prabhupada said " You have such nice hair!" she smiled and after that she opened up and started talking. Somehow Srila Prabhupada could sense what level of consciousness she was in. He said a thing that immediately made her feel very happy. After that she became very friendly. Later she asked Srila Prabhupada about the beads, and he started to preach to her.

One day Srila Prabhupada was sitting on his vyasasana and he asked whether they knew what the position of the spiritual master was, and the what the meaning of initiation into spiritual life was. Of course everyone was interested, they were amazed, they were enthralled. " What is this diksha?" "What is this initiation?" "What is this spiritual entrance?" They were very curious to find out. In fact one person asked, " What is the meaning of this initiation?" Then Srila Prabhupada, looking at them, changed his mannerism and he simply said to them that initiation meant they had to accept the spiritual master as they would accept God Himself, to do whatever he said. Then he got up and walked out, lefted them to think about it. Later he explained," You want to know what is initiation? It means no more free will, Whatever the spiritual master says that you do. That is initiation - he is the representative of God."

"To board an Indian cargo vessel at the age of sixty-nine and travel across
the ocean to America without any money is no small feat. Srila Prabhupada
said that had any of his disciples had to travel under those conditions,
they would not have been able to maintain their Krsna consciousness. Srila
Prabhupada's faith in his spiritual master and Krsna was so strong, however,
that it could not be shaken by any external circumstances.
Without that kind of implicit faith in the orders of the spiritual master,
in the words of the scriptures, and in the Supreme Personality of Godhead,
the purport of the Vedas is not revealed. Srila Prabhupada had that kind of
absolute faith, and the secrets of the Vedas were also revealed to him.
Before he even stepped off the ship in America, he very poetically, yet very
clearly, described how the Western people were situated, and how they would
be delivered"

One year we were crushing sugar cane. They were cutting the sugar cane
stalks from the field, piling them up by the second gate, taking them across
the road, crushing them, and then cooking them down into jagari. One day
Srila Prabhupada was walking by there, and he noticed that the area was very
unclean. In India, the village people take sugar cane, take the skin off,
and chew the inside like a candy stick. You suck it and get the juice out of
it, and then you spit out the pulp.
The people by that place were all grhasthas with children, so the place was
scattered with these spittings. Srila Prabhupada complained that they should
clean up after themselves. "Why do they spit everywhere?" he said. Then he
went into the kitchen.
In the meantime, they swept up the sugar cane spittings that were scattered
here and there. But they swept them right next to the uncut, uncrushed raw
sugar cane stalks. Then Srila Prabhupada came back. The man who was sweeping
was an older Indian gentlemen, and Srila Prabhupada began to really chastise
Srila Prabhupada said to him, "You call yourself a Hindu? You are sweeping
the spittings by the side of the bhoga? You are going to crush and offer
this sugar cane to God, to Krsna? And you're sweeping the spittings right
next to that?"
Srila Prabhupada just kept hammering in on him. He said, "You're not coming
to the temple to go back to Godhead. You're coming here to go to hell.
You're coming here and committing aparadhas, and then you will go to hell.
You're born in India and you don't know not to sweep the spittings next to
the unoffered sugar cane?" When Srila Prabhupada would latch onto someone,
he would not let up.
Meanwhile, a little two-year-old baby came by. He was stark naked, except
for a little string he was wearing around his belly. That is quite common in
India. He was running by, chewing on a sugar cane, and spitting. Then this
man went and grabbed the sugar cane from the baby, and the baby started
bawling. Srila Prabhupada then said to him in Bengali, "Tumi ustadi koro
It is a very sarcastic remark. It is hard to translate it exactly. The word
ustad means 'the king of all the coaches.' For example, the top tabla player
in the world is called ustad. Srila Prabhupada was saying to the man, "Don't
try to impress me by acting like you're the big coach, the big guru, the big
expert teacher."
This man had made a mistake and he was being chastised, so then when an
innocent baby went by, he grabbed the candy away from it just to make a show
that now he is really vigilant. But he already completely blew it. Srila
Prabhupada was thus telling him, "Don't be a show-off. Don't show off now
after neglecting your duty." In this way, sometimes by chastising, sometimes
by criticizing, sometimes by satire, and sometimes by joking, Srila
Prabhupada would teach his disciples."

"One time Srila Prabhupada was sitting in his room and one devotee was
chanting japa and walking back and forth outside the room. Then Srila
0Prabhupada rang his bell and called the devotee into his room. "What mantra
is he chanting?" he asked. "What this 'Hare nix nix nix nix Ram.'"

Krishna is so Kind.

I was in Montreal and Prabhupada was giving a lecture. At that time- they got a Vyasasana for him, a very high one - It was that if you stood up you would be facing Prabhupada eye to eye - or He would still be a little bit higher then that. It was a very high vyasasana and he had to crawl up, there were steps going up there. It was more like a pulpit. He would even take prasadam sitting on it. They would bring a big plate of prasadam and sometimes he would give it out from there. One day he was giving his lecture from up there, naturally, and at this point he was preaching very hard. We have to be a hundred percent Krishna conscious - we have to try to be hundred percent Krishna conscious, We have to try for that. If we are hundred percent Krishna conscious then we can get pure love of Krishna, then our life will be successful. He was just hammering on this point. The devotees were thinking a hundred percent! Their heads were gradually hanging down and they became very thoughtful. A hundred percent! It was such an objective that it never seemed that it would ever be possible to get very close to hundred percent. But Prabhupada was very emphatic on this point. The devotees were very thoughtful at this time. When Prabhupada ended the class, there was a heavy silence. He ended the class saying, " Become cent percent Krishna conscious." It was just like a death sentence, the silence was so thick you could swim through. Prabhupada was sitting on that raised vyasasana and said, " Even if you are ninety percent Krishna conscious, Krishna is so kind that you still may be delivered." Then he started down and he was half way down. Just as he was getting off the vyasasana he turned to the devotees and said, " Even eighty percent, you can be delivered." He started walking off and he turned and his chadder fell off. I remember it was so dramatic..... almost like you see in the movies, "Julius Caesar." He said, " Even seventy percent!" He took his chadder and threw it over his shoulders and raised his head and walked off. The purport was that we should try for one hundred percent.

Srila Prabhupada said that, at one point Srila Bhakti Siddhanta said, "If I have just one madhyama adhikari disciple, one, just one, never mind if he is not first class, uttama adhikari, if I get one second class devotee, I would say my whole movement is a success."

Srila Prabhupada once went to visit a wealthy man in Calcutta, whom he knew for many years. He went to his house, and the devotees told the man at the door, "Srila Prabhupada is here and he likes to see Mr. so and so". The man went in and brought a message that his master was doing puja and that they should come back a little later. Srila Prabhupada said, "He does not know how to satisfy Krishna. What is the position of that devotee? He is simply a kanishta adhikari! He is doing his puja and Krishna has sent His devotee. To greet a devotee is a higher principle than worshipping the Deity in a mechanical way."

Srila Prabhupada personally did not like the samadhi mandir of Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati, because he said that they made the murti look like someone else. But it certainly did not remind him of Bhakti Siddhanta. When he went there, his godbrothers put him into so many different kinds of inconvenient situations. Whenever he went past the mandir, he just paid his obeisances with his hand. So, one day when he came to the gate, one of his godbrothers was criticizing, "Why does Bhaktivedanta Swami not come and bow down before the samadhi mandir of Srila Bhakti Siddhanta, before his guru's mandir? This is a defect." I happened to be present in his room when he heard this. He was very much affected. He said, "They don't understand, they think that Bhaktisiddhanta is stuck there in the ground. They don't realize that he is sitting by my side, guiding me and helping me." The kanishta adhikari thinks that one can worship the spiritual master only by ringing the bell at the arati. They can't see that by carrying out his order a pure disciple is intimately connected with his spiritual master more than at any other time. And that connection is so strong and sweet that he may even override some ritual, being absorbed in that mood of satisfying his inner- most desire.

'Apparently Srila Prabhupada would tend not to chastise his devotees in the
Western temples very much. We had a special rasa with Srila Prabhupada is in
India that when he came here, after the first couple of days he would begin
to act almost like a temple president or G.B.C. If he did not like
something, he would chastise us for it. Most of the other leaders knew that
this was some special rasa. But sometimes when we would get chastised, some
leader would think it was funny.
One time Srila Prabhupada was walking on a morning walk, taking a tour. At
that time we had this circular bathroom. There were quite a few devotees
living at the temple, so there were ten latrines in the external part of the
bathroom and ten showers, and the inside was for women. Srila Prabhupada was
walking, and all of the sudden he decided he wanted to go to the bathroom.
He went in to the bathroom, and in the toilet there was a big pile of night
soil. He went to the next one and found the same thing. Then he turned
around and said, "You call yourself brahmanas? Wherever a brahmana lives it
must be clean."
Just at that time, Jaya Tirtha dasa had pulled up in his car and had come
and joined Srila Prabhupada. Jaya Tirtha was smiling. I don't think he knew
what was happening. It was not the time to smile.
Then Srila Prabhupada just got on him. He turned to Jaya Tirtha and said to
him, "You call yourself a brahmana? How can you allow this to happen?"
Jaya Tirtha stuttered, "I just -- I just got here."
But Srila Prabhupada continued, "Wherever a brahmana is, it must be clean."
Srila Prabhupada just was not going to give up. He was making a very strong
point, and he just kept pressing the point. He told Jaya Tirtha that he was
responsible as a brahmana for the toilets being dirty. He was here, he was a
brahmana, the toilets were dirty, and wherever a brahmana is, it has to be
clean. There was no excuse.
In other words, a brahmana should actually feel responsible wherever he goes
to see that everything is kept at a certain standard. They could not live in
a messy place or a dirty place. That was Srila Prabhupada's point. Srila
Prabhupada was really insistent on cleanliness.
One time Srila Prabhupada inspected the kitchen. He wanted to get the
highest standard of cleanliness. He looked around and said, "It's not
clean." Then the devotees had a cleaning marathon and really scrubbed and
cleaned the kitchen thoroughly.
The next day, Srila Prabhupada came back for another inspection. He went
through the whole kitchen. It was spotless. Then he came out, and he saw one
dirty spot on the stairway. However, it wasn't actually dirt. It was cement.
When they had constructed the building, they used colored cement. Then when
they plastered the wall, a piece of gray cement had fallen and landed on the
colored cement. So Srila Prabhupada saw that on the stairway, and he said,
"What is that? Dirt! Clean it now!"
I went down with a brush and tried to clean it, but it was cement! Then
Srila Prabhupada said, "Just see!" It appeared like it was some dirt that
was so caked on that it would not come off easily. At that time I was
practically in tears. Then Srila Prabhupada said, "All right, it's cement."'
