Dear Godsiblings,

Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Gurudev! All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

I have seen in my travels in the United States that many devotees eat chocolate cake prasadam. I have spoken to different devotees and they say that some gurus eat so their disciples eat and others don't coz their guru doesn't. I wanted to have a clear understanding based on what Guru Maharaj and Srila Prabhupada said with reference to this.

I will be very grateful if senior devotees throw some light on this matter.

I have read of one incident when a devotee brought Srila Prabhupada some chocolate. Prabhupada asked what is it, and the devotee praised the chocolate as very good quality. So Srila Prabhupada said: "Let's see," or something to that effect, and took a piece and ate it. So from this version there is not an absolute prohibition. Chocolate is said to be a mild euphoriant for some persons. In my experience, chocolate can cause symptoms of depression and possibly disturbed sleep in susceptible individuals; therefore it is good to recommend that people avoid it. If someone wants to taste it and find out... in the western countries you often hear of "chocaholics" referred to humourously, where people seek out that euphoria.

Sorry, prabhu. I just noticed where you sought input specifically from senior devotees.

Thank you very much prabhu. I also read a pastime of Srila Prabhupada on dandavats where a devotee was hiding chcolate in his bead bag and when he offered dandavats to Srila Prabhupada, it fell down. So Prabhupada personally took him to the kitchen and taught him how to cook halwa and said "No need to eat these things when so many other sweet preperations can be offered to Krishna". So if you can find out from other devotees and let me know that would be great.

your humble servant,

amrta sakhi devi dasi

Thank you very much mataji.

Just happend to see this:

In 1993 the GBC passed a

resolution that ISKCON devotees should not eat chocolate.

According to GBC resolution 93.31

 31. That, as it contains various stimulants like caffeine (contained in

coffee), theine (contained in black tea) and theobromine (contained in

cacao), chocolate should not be eaten by ISKCON devotees.

Your humble servant,

amrta skahi devi dasi

Thank you very much mataji. That helps.
Haribolo.
Just a little input from H.H. Sivarama Swami.

Here is a transcript of the section about chocolate (from 4.42):

In answering this question I should point out.... that there was some discussion about this topic not long ago, in the GBC, and it was pointed out that the information that was given to Srila Prabhupada, and that is that chocolate contains coffeine [sic] was incorrect, ah, and it's not a [sic] intoxicant on the same level as coffee, tea, etc. So Srila Prabhupada had told devotees not to take chocolate on the basis of the information that they had given, ah therefore, ah, chocolate does not contain caffeine. Having said that, it's a substance that is cooked and prepared by karmis. Vaisnavas generally do not eat karmi foods. If someone were to ask whether they could eat bread cooked by karmis, the answer, Srila Prabhupada's answer is 'no'.

[Maharaja discusses not going nuts on eating chocolate, and discusses using cocoa butter to make preparations for the Deity]

[7:42]
...the information is there that they do not contain caffeine, and they are no longer a banned substance.

I was present personally when some devotee asked Gurumaharaja that he can not live without chocolate. Gurumaharaja told him dont leave Krishna Counciousness because of chocolate. Then he asked one servant to bring chocolate and gave him. The devotee feeled foolish to have such ideas in mind that he could give up KC just for such a stupid thing. He didnt seem to have desire to eat afterwards.

First class offering is what Krishna likes to eat. Last class is what we want to eat and offer to Krishna.

Hare Krsna,  pamho, agtsp, agtsgnsg,

Tears swelled in my eyes when i read this pastime of our beloved guru maharaj, how magnanimous his act was !!.

In one stroke he cured the material disease & paved spiritual guidance by his generosity without hurting anyone's feelings.  This is the greatness n mercy of a pure devotee. All glories to Srila Jayapataka swami guru maharaj.  Thanks prabhuji for your wonderful reply.

Aspiring His eternal service,

Hare Krishna dear Godbrother,

I am anything but a senior devotee, but would like to share this.

Cakes made of carob, also look like choclate color and is often offered in the ISKCON  temples. It appears to be choclate, but it is a safe substitute and is very tasty.

Feel free to try one.
